Barra, or Praia da Barra, sits on the Ponta da Barra peninsula on the Inhambane coast. It is a beach settlement of resorts, private holiday homes, restaurants and dive operators, about 25 km by road from Inhambane city. If you are looking for property for sale in Barra, Move2Moz has been listing and selling homes here since 2016.

Why buyers choose Barra

The beach and the water. Barra is known for calm, swimmable stretches of beach and some of the best snorkelling and diving on the coast. The wider Barra and Tofo area is one of the world’s well-known hotspots for whale sharks, sea turtles and manta rays.

The lighthouse and tidal pool. The Barra Lighthouse stands on the point, and at low tide a natural tidal pool below it is popular for snorkelling.

Close to Inhambane. Barra is close enough to Inhambane city for shopping, banking and healthcare, while still feeling like a quiet beach destination.

Buying property in Barra as a foreigner

Foreign nationals can own property in Mozambique. Land is held through a state-granted land-use right known as a DUAT, and a built property is registered with a title deed. Always use proper local legal representation and verify title before you commit. Move2Moz has guided foreign buyers through this process since 2016, and our complete guide to buying property in Mozambique explains each step.

What to think about before you buy in Barra

  • Weather exposure is real. Tropical Cyclone Dineo struck this coast in February 2017 and Barra was close to its centre, so well-built, well-maintained property matters.
  • Community. If you are South African, you will feel right at home in Barra, as the majority of residents and homeowners are South Africans. Tofo, by comparison, is much more diverse.
  • Prices, rental income and amenities. These can vary quite a bit depending on the region, so check with us first about what will work best for you.
